Such forms of combustion are: gas hot water heaters, gas furnaces, gas stoves or cook tops, automobiles, candles, wood burning or gas stoves, and any other appliance that uses combustion to operate.
As a result of the recent fatalities associated with carbon monoxide new legislation will require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in homes that are being sold and in all new construction applications.

The benefits of using a hard wired system over the plug in type are as follows.
- Hard wired devices come with a battery back up system much like a common smoke detector where as the plug in type do not. This added safety measure insures that the detector will continue to work even after power is removed from the system. Remember, most outlets located in basements, near furnaces, and around water sources are GFCI protected. These devices insure personal safety in the event of an incidental ground fault in the circuit. They do not provide an indication of a fault which means that if you have had a fault in the GFCI circuit you will loose power to your plug in type carbon monoxide detector leaving you unprotected.
- The hard wired system can be interconnected with existing hardwired smoke detectors to insure that everyone will be aware of the danger. What this means is that in the event of a carbon monoxide poisoning the entire hard wired system will annunciate insuring that all persons are aware of the danger. The plug in type systems do not have this feature which may allow the plug in type detectors to sound in a location where they do not properly notify the occupants of the danger before it is too late.
